Competition format

  • The top four schools on the final league log in each division qualify.
  • Semi-final 1: seed 1 v seed 4. Semi-final 2: seed 2 v seed 3.
  • Winners meet in the division final; the losing semi-finalists play for third place.
  • Semi-finals are 25 minutes a half with a 5-minute break and a 5-minute changeover — an hour a match.
  • Finals are 20 minutes a half with a 10-minute half-time and 5-minute changeover.
  • Division prize giving takes place during the following final's half-time, with the Second Team and First Team awards after the First Team final.
  • A Homecoming Playoffs 26 match level after regulation time is decided by a penalty shootout: five kicks each, then sudden death.
  • Shootout kicks decide the winner only — they never count towards Golden Boot goals or league statistics.
Matchday rules

Laws of the game, kit & ground rules

Everything coaches, players and supporters need to know before arriving at the venue.

1. Laws of the game — variations

All FIFA Laws of the Game apply to all age groups, with the variations listed here.

  • A maximum of 9 substitutes per team. No rolling substitutes — the standard substitution law is enforced.
  • The referee must be informed before any substitution is made.
  • A substitute may only enter after the player being replaced has left the field and the referee has signalled.
  • A substitute may only enter from the halfway line, during a stoppage in play.
  • Each team may participate with a squad of 20 players only.
  • A red card carries a 1-match ban.
  • Time is not stopped for injuries and there is no extra time.
  • No coaching or standing behind the goals by coaches, managers, parents, supporters or spectators. The referee may move anyone doing so, without protest.

2. Player safety & kit

  • No player may wear anything dangerous — necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, leather or rubber bands. Players are inspected before kick-off.
  • Compulsory kit: a shirt with sleeves, shorts, socks, shinguards (suitable protective material, fully covered by the socks) and correct footwear.
  • No shinguards = no play
  • Tape or any material worn externally on the sock must be the same colour as that part of the sock.
  • The two teams must wear colours that distinguish them from each other and from the match officials.
  • Undershirts must be a single colour matching the main colour of the shirt sleeve, or a pattern that exactly replicates the sleeve.
  • Tights must be the same colour as the main colour of the shorts.

3. Ground rules

  • Strictly no alcohol or smoking anywhere on the school premises.
  • All participants' bags will be searched at the gate.
  • The school is strictly cashless — refreshments are sold at the tuckshop.
  • Players must be registered at their respective schools for the year.
  • Managers and coaches are responsible for ensuring all rules are enforced.
  • Spectators who infringe any of these requirements will be asked to leave the grounds.
